A battery checking device is provided to improve battery checking accuracy by classifying remaining power of the battery into plural levels, such as a half level, a warning level, and a lock level. A portable device, such as a digital camera, includes a first control circuit(11), a second control circuit(12), and a data processing circuit(13). Power is supplied from a power source to the respective circuits. The first control circuit receives signals for displaying an exposure mode, an ISO(International Standard Organization) sensitivity, and white balance information. The second control circuit includes a switch for selecting one of aperture and shutter speed modes. An AF(Auto Focusing) device(31) is driven by the electric power from a voltage supply circuit and outputs an AF pulse according to an AF driving signal from the second control circuit. The portable device includes a CCD(Charge Coupled Device) and a monitor. A photometry timer is periodically turned on/off and a measuring property of the main switch is checked.
