The method involves setting a sequential illumination beam to illuminate the imager, where the beam includes sequences of monochrome illumination sub-beams comprising three colors such as red, green and blue and two of colors e.g. yellow, magenta, and cyan. The sequences are provided by an illumination unit, where each sequence comprises three pairs of colors having complementary characteristics. The illumination unit is composed of a polychromatic light source and a filtering unit which includes a color wheel. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) an illumination system for illuminating an imager of an image projector (2) an image projector comprising an imager and an illumination system.
