The device has a pair of cams (6) coming in contact with two opposite surfaces of a rod (5), under the action of a return spring (10), for provoking locking of the rod in a determined direction through a wedging effect in the absence of an actuator`s air supply. An unlocking piston (9) acts on the cams against the action of the spring when the actuator is supplied in a direction corresponding to the displacement of the rod in a determined direction. An independent claim is also included for a hydraulic or pneumatic actuator equipped with a locking device.
