[Also in Group XVII] A battery box a and lid c both of polythene are fused together by placing metal or other heat resisting rings e, f outside the upper end of the box and inside the flange d of the lid to form a shallow trough t as shown in Fig. 2. A heated tool h, Fig. 3, is then pressed on to the upper edges of the abutting surfaces of the lid and box till they are fused together. A sheet g of polytetrafluorethylene may be placed over the joint to prevent the fused material of the box and lid from sticking to the tool. When the operation is complete the sheet g and rings e, f are removed. In a modification of the process the box wall and flange d project above the rings e, f as shown in Fig. 4 and the tool h has a flat surface which is pressed on a polytetrafluorethylene sheet g which covers the whole of the lid.</p> |
