PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely determine contact of a piston and a cylinder with a simple construction. SOLUTION: A Stirling engine 1 which is a piston apparatus has a high temperature side piston 10A reciprocating in a high temperature side cylinder 11A and a low temperature side piston 10B reciprocating in a low temperature side cylinder 11B. The high temperature side cylinder 11A, the high temperature side piston 10A, the low temperature side cylinder 11B and the low temperature side piston 10B are respectively formed of conductive material such metal. Electric conduction between the high temperature side cylinder 11A and the high temperature side piston 10A and electric conduction between the low temperature side cylinder 11B and the low temperature side piston 10B are measured respectively by a first voltage measuring instrument 17A and a second voltage measuring instrument 17B. The contact of the piston and the cylinder is determined based on the electric conduction between the high temperature side cylinder 11A and the high temperature side piston 10A and the like.
