The method involves configuring change-over units (7, 7`) of an exhaust system (1) to be moved into two positions to adjust one of the flow paths in the exhaust system by a drive (9). Different values of an operating parameter of a transmission line of a vehicle, and a function of open and closed positions of a roof unit part, which bounds a vehicle occupant compartment, are taken into account when the change-over unit is manually actuated between the positions. A convertible top is provided as a vehicle part bounding the compartment above a belt line.
