PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printing apparatus and a control method for the same capable of detecting a printing medium tray and of pulling out the top of the printing medium by means of a TOF detector and a BOF detector without additionally providing an exclusive tray detector, and to provide a tray for the printing device to be used in the printing apparatus. SOLUTION: The printer 1 comprises a printing section 3 printing on a printing medium, the TOF detector 52 detecting the front end of a carried object to be supplied to the printing section 3 and the BOF detector 53 detecting the rear end of the carried object to be supplied to the printing section 3, allowing at least either the TOF detector 52 or the BOF detector 53 to detect the tray 65.
