PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which can obtain a good image without any error of a main scanning magnification and can obtain a good image without a color shift in forming a color image. SOLUTION: When printing is started, a quantity of LD light is set to be one for the time of 600 dpi printing (S201). An interval between two synchronous detections is measured in the state (S202). Adjustment of the main scanning magnification is terminated (S203) by performing correction of a pixel clock. Thereafter, the quantity of LD light is reset to one corresponding to each writing pixel density (S204, S205 and S206). Image data is outputted to carry out the printing operation (S207).
