<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently provide a means for detecting a sugar chain-expressing cell or tissue, including a cancer cell, by obtaining a new protein which highly sensitively recognizes the cell or tissue in a sugar chain structure specific manner. <P>SOLUTION: This protein is obtained by discovering a new gene of a protein belonging to a siglec family and using a genetic engineering procedure.
