PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a drive method of an area image sensor capable of attaining a high frame rate even when the area image sensor has no structure for a high speed draft mode. SOLUTION: The drive method stores electric charges to photodiodes, transfers the electric charges stored in the photodiodes to vertical CCDs, transfers the electric charges in each cell of the vertical CCDs to a horizontal CCD to store electric charges by the cells of the vertical CCDs to each cell of the horizontal CCD, transfers the electric charges of each cell of the horizontal CCD to a detection section, and detects the electric charges transferred to the detection section.
