The invention describes a machine for producing bags, preferably made of paper from a web of material, to be precise with a device (1) for transversely perforating the web of material. This includes at least one perforating knife (6) which rotates at a peripheral speed about a rotation shaft (2) and with which transverse perforation cuts can be made in the web of material (8), and a counterpressure roller (7) with which the web of material (8) can be transported at a transporting speed and which provides the counterforce necessary for the perforation operation. The peripheral speed of the perforating knife (6) can be changed during rotation about the rotation shaft (2).
