The present invention relates to a method for reducing the amount of data to be processed in a visualization pipeline, which visualization pipeline comprises the steps of data capture (1), compression (2), storage (3), decompression (4), and rendering (5) comprising the use of a transfer function (TF). The data is divided into blocks in the step of compression (2) and the reduction is achieved by adaptively selecting a level-of-detail for each block in the step of decompression (4) utilizing a significance measure based on the transfer function (TF).
