PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To expand low emission combustion (premixed combustion) zone of each cylinder. SOLUTION: This engine is provided with an engine body 10 including a plurality of cylinders 11, a fuel injection device 14 for injecting fuel into each cylinder 11 of the engine body 10, an EGR rate adjustment means 17 for adjusting EGR rate for each cylinder 11 of the engine body 10, an ignition timing detection means 22 for detecting ignition timing of each cylinder 11 of the engine body 10, and a control device 16 for controlling the fuel injection device 14 and the EGR rate adjustment means 17 based on detection value of the ignition timing detection means 22. The control device 16 maintains premixed combustion by injecting fuel earlier than compression top dead center of a piston until adjustable limit of the EGR rate adjustment means 17 to keep the detection value of the ignition timing detection means 22 in a predetermined ignition timing range for each cylinder 1 of the engine body 10, and changes over to diffusing combustion by injecting fuel in a neighborhood of compression top dead center of the piston in the cylinder 11 of the engine body 10 exceeding the limit in order.
