PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide asphalt for pavement having excellent degradation resistance such as large ductility after a thin membrane heating test and a large penetration residual rate, by a simple method. SOLUTION: A long residue obtained by atmospheric distillation of crude oil at <400°C is subjected to vacuum distillation at a cut temperature in a range of 500-650°C to obtain a short residue with a wax amount of <2.2 mass%, an asphaltene content of 7.5-10.2 mass%, a sulfur content of 5.63-6.00 mass% and a vanadium/nickel ratio of 3.02-3.66, which is used as the asphalt for pavement.
