PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an environmental barrier coating having resistance to environmental attack and thin in coating thickness. SOLUTION: An article (10) comprises a silicon-containing substrate (30), the environmental barrier coating (EBC) (42) overlying the substrate (30) and comprising an outer alkaline earth aluminosilicate barrier layer (66) and a corrosion resistant alumina/aluminate sealant (74) for the outer barrier layer (66). In an alternative process, the porous outer barrier layer (66) is treated with a liquid composition comprising a corrosion resistant alumina/aluminate sealant precursor to infiltrate the porous outer barrier layer with the alumina/aluminate sealant precursor in an amount sufficient to provide protection of the environmental barrier coating (42) against the environmental attack, when converted to the corrosion resistant alumina/aluminate sealant and the infiltrated alumina/aluminate sealant precursor within the porous outer barrier layer (66) is converted to the corrosion resistant alumina/aluminate sealant.
