A flow control device for controlling a stern flow field agitated by a cooling water discharged from the cooling water discharge port of a ship. The device is positioned within three times the diameter of the discharge port from the cooling water discharge port. The mounting angle of the device is 16 to 30° relative to the horizontal plane of the hull of the ship, the width of the device in the height direction of the hull is 0.2 to 0.6 times the diameter of the discharge port, and the width of the device in the longitudinal direction of the hull is 0.5 to 1.3 times the diameter of the discharge port. Since the occurrence of cavities can be reduced by recovering the distribution of a wake flowing into a propeller symmetrically to the center axis of the hull, the vibration resistance performance of the ship can be increased and also the propulsive efficiency thereof can be increased.
