METHOD AND DEVICE FOR AUTHENTICATING MS THAT HAS AN R-UIM BY USING CAVE ALGORITHM

A method and an apparatus for authenticating a mobile station having an R-UIM by using a CAVE algorithm is provided to reduce wastes caused by replacement of R-UIM cards. A RAND(Reasonable And Non-Discriminating) necessary for calculation of an authentication parameter is extracted from random values included in a Chap Challenge message. An R-UIM(Removable-User Identity Module) card indicates to calculate an authentication parameter with the RAND and an existing SSD(Shared Secret Data)_A in the R-UIM card. The authentication parameter and identification are disposed in the Chap Response message. The R-UIM card is a single-mode card supporting a CAVE(Cellular Authentication and Voice Encryption) authentication algorithm.
