PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for stably producing a gas barrier film having excellent transparency and showing the excellent gas barrier property under a high-humidity condition in no need of the heat treatment of unsaturated carboxylic acid at 180 to 200°C. SOLUTION: The base material layer is coated with a polyvalent metal salt solution of unsaturated carboxylic acid of less than 20 degree of polymerization and the polyvalent metal salt of the unsaturated carboxylic acid is pre-polymerized in the presence of a solvent, then subjected to the main polymerization, preferably the main polymerization is allowed to follow the step of partial drying of the coating solution.
