PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical disk device having a function of assisting a user how to deal with a situation when the optical disk of a DVD-Video can not be reproduced by investigating the reason why it can not be reproduced. SOLUTION: An error is displayed when reading of the data of a relevant optical disk is not normally carried out. Accordingly, it is found that the optical disk is the one where no data are recorded, the one with a damaged, or the one prepared by an inexpensive optical disk. An error is displayed when the optical disk violates a standard, and thus an instruction is made to send inquiries to a provider who created software or a device manufacturer. An error is displayed when the optical disk is not the one conforming to the DVD-Video standard, and thus an instruction is made to load an optical disk having the VDD-Video recorded therein.
