PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display element with which full color display of high resolution is attainable. SOLUTION: The display element is provided with a light controlling cell having at least a light transmissible display substrate, a rear substrate opposed to the display substrate via a gap, a first transparent electrode provided at the display substrate, a second electrode provided at the rear substrate, a gap member holding the gap between the display substrate and the rear substrate, a third electrode provided at the gap member and charge transferable fine particles encapsulated in a light controlling cell main body so as to be transferable according to an electric field formed by voltage applied to the first electrode and the second electrode or the third electrode and developing coloring properties in a dispersion state.
