According to known methods in prior art, measures are only taken if a triggering event occurs, if for example sampled values indicate a potential deviation of an operating component from its target operating condition. The invention relates to a method for operating a diagnostic and service system in a motor vehicle, according to which actions and/or measurements are initiated in order to verify, diagnose and/or calibrate and the reactions or results thus obtained are registered, stored and further processed in evaluation units. Said method is characterised in that said actions and/or measurements take place in the idle phase of the vehicle. The invention is particularly suitable for operating a diagnostic and service system in a motor vehicle.
