The device has a controller that is electrically connected with a control device (2) by electrical lines. One of the electrical line is designed as bit synchronous interface for transmitting bit serial signals. Another line is designed as a control line, by which digital or analog signals and pulse width modulated signals and safety relevant data are transmitted from the control device to the controller for controlling the controller. The control line is unidirectional. An independent claim is also included for a method for communication between a generator controller for a voltage source with a variable output voltage and a control device in a motor vehicle.
