The method involves determining separations of soot in an inter digital condenser (IDK) structure (2) or a heating conductor (4) by the change of an electrical or thermal measured value of the structure or the conductor. The separation is determined by the change of electrical resistance, capacitance and impedance of the structure or by the change of temperature or infrared radiation (IR) of the conductor. An independent claim is also included for a soot sensor.
