The system has a transmitter connected to a video source. A superimposer is provided for superimposing a specification signal and clock signals. A receiver (2) is operatively connected to the transmitter and a playback device. The transmitter and receiver are connected to one another via a CAT5 cable (5). The cable has a circuit pair (10) supplying the specification signal and the clock signals to the receiver. Another circuit pair (11) supplies digital red video to the receiver. Third and fourth circuit (12, 13) pairs respectively supply digital green and blue videos to the receiver. An independent claim is also included for a receiver for a transmission system for connecting a playback device to a video source.
