A device and a method for recognizing a fingerprint are provided to precisely recognize the fingerprint based on composition of partial fingerprint images without respect to a difference between a sliding speed and a sampling speed of a sensor for recognizing the fingerprint. A fingerprint sensor(10) obtains the partial fingerprint images according to sliding. A sliding information output part(30) detects a sliding direction/speed based on a result comparing brightness values of an area overlapped between the obtained partial fingerprint images. A storing part(40) stores the partial fingerprint images and sliding information. A corrector(50) corrects speed information of the corresponding partial fingerprint image by determining whether non-composition caused from absence of the overlapped area is present or not. A composer(60) composes the partial fingerprint images to one complete fingerprint image based on the corrected sliding information.
