PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an environmental barrier coating thin in the coating thickness and durable against environmental attack. SOLUTION: An article (10) comprises a silicon-containing substrate (30), a silicide-containing bond coat layer (42) overlying the substrate (30) and the environmental barrier coating (EBC) (50) overlying the bond coat layer (42), wherein the EBC (50) comprises a corrosion resistant outer layer (66) comprising a corrosion resistant metal silicate. The process includes (a) a step for providing the silicon-containing substrate (30) having the silicide-containing bond coat layer (42) overlying the substrate (30) and (b) a step for forming the corrosion resistant outer layer (66) containing the corrosion resistant metal silicate over the bond coat layer (42).
