PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive basis weight measuring method easy to handle, and a basis weight measuring instrument. SOLUTION: The basis weight measuring instrument is equipped with the dielectric rosonator 1 arranged only to one side of a sample 10, a shield container 4 for substantially covering the dielectric rosonator 1 excepting its sample measuring surface, exciting devices 6 and 2a for a microwave producing an electric field spectrum in the dielectric rosonator 1, detectors 8 and 2b for detecting the transmission energy or reflected energy due to the dielectric rosonator 1, a memory device 12 storing a calibration curve showing the resonance frequency shift quantity with respect to the basis weight formed on the basis of the resonance frequency shift quantity measured by the dielectric rosonator 1 under a definite condition with respect to the respective basis weights by altering the basis weight of a standard sample constant in dielectric constant and density and known in its basis weight and a data processor 14 for operating the basis weight of a measuring target sample from the measuring result of the resonance frequency shift quantity of the measuring target sample equal to the standard sample in dielectric constant and density and the calibration curve.
