PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for detecting wire positions, capable of detecting the length of the wire between both the ends of cut faces of the wire by detecting the positions of the wire in the lateral direction of a sheet-like member, while cutting the sheet-like member. SOLUTION: The magnetic resistance, between a cutter 130 of a magnetic material and a position separated from the cutter 130 in a longitudinal direction of the wire 301, is detected by a magnetic resistance detector 140 which moves together with the cutter 130. The positions of the wire 301 of both the ends of the sheetlike member 300 in the lateral direction are detected, respectively, based on the position of the cutter 130, when the cutter 130 which is out of contact with the wire 301 comes into contact with the wire 301 and the position of the cutter 130, when the cutter 130 which is in contact with the wire 301 that no longer is in contact with the wire 301.
