PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a headrest for an automobile which is equipped with a retaining mechanism enabling the use of the same components as those of a height adjustment mechanism. SOLUTION: A retaining notch 5a as well as height adjustment notches 4 are provided in a stay 3a which is inserted into a bush 6a equipped with the height adjustment mechanism and the height adjustment mechanism also used as one of the retaining mechanisms. A retaining notch 5b is provided in the other stay 3b and a bushing 6b has a locking member engaged with the retaining notch.
