A higher luminance resolution is achieved by performing a high-accuracy color filter array interpolation of a color-coded RGB image. A first correlation value of the surrounding pixels of an interpolation object pixel is computed from the output of a set of bandpass filters disposed horizontally and vertically, and a second correlation value of the surrounding pixels is computed from the output of a set of bandpass filters shifted ± 45° with respect to the vertical direction. The first and second correlation values are compared with the correlation curve, the direction of the correlation is determined over all the directions (360°) surrounding the interpolation object, and an interpolation pixel (X) is interpolated according to the information on the surrounding pixels present in the determined direction.
