<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a structured document processing system which enables a complicated processing of data with a small memory consumption. <P>SOLUTION: When this system analyzes two XML (Extensible Markup Language) documents and performs processing such as merging of data, this system specifies a 'record' tag among each XML document and maintains data surrounded with the 'record' tag as a lump of text data. The system seeks for data necessary to processing by performing text retrieval in the text data, and uses it to the processing. When the processing can be performed keeping text data, the processing is performed in that condition; and when more complicated processing is necessary, the text data is regenerated to objects and the processing is performed.
