PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector capable of inserting a light shielding member for scanning illumination light under less limitation and capable of reducing noise and attaining high-contrast display. SOLUTION: A stripe-like first transmissive pattern image PA1 can be formed in an image area of a liquid crystal display panel 31 in each line of a scanning electrode and a second transmissive pattern image PA2 in which the bright-dark patterns of the first transmissive pattern image PA1 are replaced can be also formed. The inverted first transmissive pattern image PA1 or the inverted second transmissive pattern image PA2 is projected to the image areas of respective liquid crystal display panels 51b, 51g, 51r. When the transmissive pattern images PA1, PA2 are alternately projected correspondingly to frames displayed on respective liquid crystal display panels 51b, 51g, 51r in suitable timing, intermittent illumination of respective liquid crystal display panels 51b, 51g, 51r can be attained and an effect for preventing blur in a moving image can be obtained.
