PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bookbinding device capable of performing bookbinding without having a sheet bundle being inclined or varied during transporting the bundle, preventing the sheet bundle from being distorted and skewed or being creased upon joining a cover sheet to the edge of the sheet bundle, and capable of positively performing bookbinding such as matching the folds after joining the cover sheet to the sheet bundle without deteriorating the appearance. SOLUTION: The bookbinding device is equipped with: a first passage for transporting the sheet bundle in a substantially vertical direction; a second passage crossing the first passage, for transporting the cover sheet in a substantially horizontal direction; a joining stage provided at the crossing part for joining the cover sheet and the sheet bundle; a grip conveying means arranged at the upstream side of the joining stage, for sandwiching the sheet bundle and transporting it along the first passage; and a folding conveyance means provided on the downstream side of the joining stage for folding the cover sheet and the sheet bundle together and carrying them out. The grip conveyance means is structured by an openable/closable clamp member for sandwiching and holding the sheet bundle, and a clamp control means for opening/closing the clamp member.
