An automatic document feeder of an image reading apparatus is provided to remove a document having paper jam by simple repetitive operation without pulling out the document, thereby preventing damage of the document and erroneous operation of the automatic document feeder. A roller(140) transfers a document. A roller driving gear(140a) rotates the roller. A driving gear transmits rotary power of a driving motor to the roller driving gear. A roller rotating device(180) maintains a stop state when the roller rotates. If the roller stops, the roller rotating device rotates the roller to transfer the document interposed into the roller. The roller rotating device includes an one-way clutch mounted on a rotary shaft of the roller for cutting rotary power of the roller, a pinion gear(182) rotating the one-way clutch, and a driving rack(184) installed reciprocatively for rotating the pinion gear.
