PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method with horizontal recording and vertical recording can be simultaneously applied to a magnetic recording medium. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium includes a substrate, an underlayer to be plated, a buffer layer, and a magnetic recording layer in this order, and the magnetic parameter of the recording medium is tuned by varying the thickness of the underlayer. A fabricating method comprises steps of (a) providing the substrate, (b) forming a tuning layer which is within a specific thickness range and tunes magnetic property of the recording medium, on the substrate, (c) forming the buffer layer on the tuning layer, and (d) forming the recording layer on the buffer layer. The variation in thickness of the underlayer located between the substrate and the recording layer of the magnetic recording medium is utilized to tune the magnetic property of the magnetic recording medium and a preferred crystal orientation of the magnetic recording layer, and properties of a preferred orientation of magnetic recording obtained by the variation in thickness of the underlayer, a direction of easy magnetization, coercive force, a magnetic anisotropy, and a hysteresis loop squareness, which are obtained by the variation in thickness of the underlayer, are turned, whereby the magnetic recording medium is provided with magnetic properties of vertical and/or parallel film layer surfaces.
