PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process which is effective in cost, and does not substantially contain diboranes for the synthesis of salts of dodecahydrododecarborates B<SB>12</SB>H<SB>12</SB>(2-). SOLUTION: In the synthetic process, a metal hydride is allowed to react with an alkyl borate in the presence of a Lewis base to produce Lewis base-borane complex, which is allowed to react with at least one metal salt to produce salts of B<SB>12</SB>H<SB>12</SB>(2-), while alkyl borate is recovered from the reaction-by-product and recycled.
