An ink jet printing apparatus and a method for controlling the ink jet printing apparatus are provided to minimize reduction of printing speed during a discharge recovering operation. An ink jet printing apparatus includes a print head, a paper supplying unit, a recovering unit, a first setting unit, a second setting unit, and a control unit. The recovering unit performs a plurality of recovering modes to recover the discharge efficiency of an ink discharge nozzle in a time period from the end point of a record medium(8) to the start of print of the record medium supplied by the paper supplying unit. The control unit controls the paper supplying unit according to a designated paper supplying condition and controls the recovering unit on the basis of the set recovering mode.
