PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a gene encoding an enzyme to oxidize various aromatic alcohols and convert to aldehydes and provide a means for producing an aromatic carboxylic acid by using a recombinant microorganism having the gene transferred/expressed in the microorganism.

SOLUTION: The invention relates to an alcohol dehydrogenase gene of Rhodococcus erythropolis PR4 strain and a method for producing an aromatic carboxylic acid by using the gene.
