PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a designing approach for optimizing the performance by considering the total electro-optical system based on an end-to-end design for an electronic optical imaging system. SOLUTION: A method designes the electro-optic imaging system for imaging an input source that includes an optical subsystem, a detector subsystem, and a digital imaging subsystem. The method comprises the steps of: modeling a propagation of the input source, which passes through the optical subsystem, the detector subsystem, and the digital imaging subsystem based on a space model of the input source; and designing both the optical subsystem and the digital imaging subsystem based on directly a post processing performance measurement for a propagation function of the modeled propagation.
