PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely detect a magnetic thread in a paper sheet even when the paper sheet is skewed, when the paper sheet except specific ones is used, or when the magnetic thread is placed in the end part of the paper sheet. SOLUTION: This paper sheet identification device is provided with a convey roller pair conveying a paper sheet P, which has the magnetic thread S, along a convey pass 11, a transmittance optical detection sensor 24 and front and back image detection sensors 25 and 26 detecting the position of the paper sheet P conveyed by the convey roller pair, first-third magnetic detection sensors 31-33 detecting the magnetic thread S on the paper sheet P, and a control part performing control for selecing one among the magnetic detection sensor means 31-33 matching the magnetic thread S based on the positional information detected by the transmittance optical sensor 24 and the front and back image detection sensors 25 and 26 and detecting the magnetic thread S on the paper sheet P by the selected magnetic detection sensor means 31 (-33).
