摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To compatibly attain quick and quiet startability during light engine load and startability during heavy engine load, while improving a degree of freedom in mounting a starting device and achieving low cost. SOLUTION: This engine starting system comprises a first starter 2 having a pinion gear 7 which always meshes with a ring gear 6, and a second starter 3 having a pinion gear 13 which can meshes with the ring gear 6 and may meshes with the ring gear 6 using electromagnetic force. The gross reduction ratio of the first starter 2 ranging from a motor 8 to the ring gear 6 is set to be smaller than a gross reduction ratio of the second starter 3 ranging from a motor 14 to the ring gear 6. Thus, the first starter 2 or the second starter 3 is selectively used depending on heavy or light engine load.
