PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a PDP driving apparatus realizing higher definition in the gradation of a PDP while almost maintaining the length of the shortest discharge maintaining period without increasing a circuit scale. SOLUTION: During the discharge maintaining period, a separation switch part (QS) and a low side scanning switch element SC2 are maintained at an ON state, and in a discharge maintaining pulse generation part (3Y), two maintaining switch parts (Q1Y, Q2Y) are alternately turned on and off. Thereby the potential of a scanning electrode (Y) of the PDP (20) is shifted between the potential (Vs) of a power supply part (Es) and grounding potential. Each of the separation switch part (QS) and the maintaining switch parts (Q1Y, Q2Y) includes the parallel connection of a plurality of switch elements (Q1, Q2, ...). The number of switch elements to be practically maintained at the ON state out of these switch elements (Q1, Q2, ...) is controlled in accordance with the luminance of a discharge cell.
