PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thickener which can substitute for a conventional fatty acid dialkanolamide and is excellent in thickening effect, foam-stabilizing effect, low-temperature stability and safety. SOLUTION: The thickener for a detergent contains at least one alkyl polyglyceryl ether chosen from the group consisting of (A) anα-monoalkyl polyglyceryl ether, (B) anα-monoalkenyl polyglyceryl ether and (C) anα-monohydroxyalkyl polyglyceryl ether represented by general formula (1) [wherein R is a linear or branched alkyl, alkenyl or hydroxyalkyl group; and n is an integer of 2-4].
