PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording medium residual quantity detecting device accurately detecting the number of residual sheet recording media on a recording medium placing base. SOLUTION: In an image forming device 1, at the timing when no recording media P are positioned both in a placed recording medium detecting part 220 for detecting the quantity of transmitted light of the recording media P on bottom plates 202a to 202d of paper feeding trays 201a to 201d and in a carried recording medium detecting part 221 for detecting the quantity of transmitted light of one recording medium P, output values of light receiving parts 220b, 221b deviating from predetermined reference values are corrected to the reference values so as to correspond to the reference values. Therefore, changes in the output values of the light receiving parts 220b, 221b caused by arrangement conditions and specification differences etc. of light emitting parts 220a, 221a and the light receiving parts 220b, 221b can be inexpensively corrected, and the number of residual recording media P can be inexpensively and accurately detected.
