PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To develop a technique which dispenses with the function of keeping the temperature of a prism constant, for the purpose of ensuring measurement accuracy in a surface plasmon sensor, where the prism is used as a part of a measuring system. SOLUTION: The surface plasmon sensor is constituted so as to employ the prism, having a negative temperature coefficient in its refractive index. The refractive index of the prism and the dependence of the refractive index are selected properly to realize high accuracy measurement by using an inexpensive device, without having to devise a measurement for providing expensive temperature adjusting function that uses a Peltier element.
