[Also in Division C5] Esters of the general formula where R contains from 4 to 30 carbon atoms, is substituted or unsubstituted, and is an alicyclic group, an aryl group, an alkaryl group or an aralkyl group, R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are hydrogen, aliphatic hydrocarbyl, alicyclic, aryl, alkaryl, aralkyl or heterocyclic groups which are optionally substituted and contain from 4 to 30 carbon atoms, X is optionally substituted and is a C 1-30 aliphatic hydrocarbyl group, an aryl, alkaryl, aralkyl or alicyclic group or a cation, are prepared by reacting a primary amine, an aldehyde and a diester of phosphorous acid, or orthophosphorous acid, or by hydrolysis of an appropriate phosphonate ester with HCl or HBr, or by reacting an amine with a carbonyl compound to form an imine and reacting this with a dialkyl phosphite.
