Apparatus for encouraging or entertaining a conscious subject to breathe through an interface 1 e.g. face mask, the apparatus comprising; a face mask 1, a gas conveying conduit 2, inhalation or exhalation detection means 10, a sound generator 6 arranged to be emit audible signal in response to inhalation or exhalation. The detection 10 means may be a switch activated by an inflatable bag 9. The system has particular use in paediatrics to help calm children.
