The second bearing (12) for taking up radial and axial forces is tensioned by a device comprising a spring-loaded piston (25) and hydraulic cylinder unit (42) separated by a space in communication with a hydraulic chamber (51) so that spring-loading is opposed as the pressure in this chamber increases. A bearing device for a refiner for refining fibrous material is described. The refiner comprises two opposing grinding discs (3, 4), the first disc being supported on an axle (5) mounted in a frame (1) via the bearing device, which comprises a bearing casing (6) with at least three bearings. The first bearing (11) is closest to the first disc and designed only to take up radial forces, a second bearing is designed to take up both radial and axial forces and a third bearing (13) located in between the first and second bearings is designed only to take up axial forces. A hydraulic chamber allows axial displacement of the axle. A device is provided for tensioning the second bearing and comprises a spring-loaded piston and a hydraulic cylinder unit housed inside a cylinder. A space inside the cylinder between the piston and cylinder unit is in communication with a first hydraulic chamber via a channel so that spring-loading is opposed as the pressure in this chamber increases.
