The invention relates to alkyl pyridinium dicyanamides of formula (I) wherein Rn1 represents cyano or C1_20 alkyl, n is a whole number ranging from 0 - 3 and the optionally present radicals1 are identical or different, and R2 represents C1_20-alkyl. The invention also relates to the production thereof from alkyl pyridinium halogenides and alkali dicyanamides, in addition to the use thereof as polar solvents.
