An LCD is provided to easily display a two-dimensional image or a three-dimensional image without additive component parts, by disposing polarizing regions having different polarizing directions on the same plane or using a phase difference layer. A first transparent substrate(4) is disposed on the front surface of a backlight unit(2). First and second polarizing regions(60,61) are formed on a surface of the first transparent substrate. The first and second polarizing regions have different polarizing directions. A first insulating layer(32) is formed on the front surfaces of the first and second polarizing regions. A liquid crystal layer(10) is disposed between first and second alignment layers(6,7). A second transparent electrode(8) and a color filter(9) are disposed on the front surface of the second alignment layer. Third and fourth polarizing regions(80,81) are formed on a second substrate(11). Herein, the first and second polarizing regions are arranged in a chess-board type. The third and fourth polarizing regions are disposed orthogonally to the first and second polarizing regions, respectively. A 1/4 phase difference layer(68) is disposed next to the second transparent substrate. |
